Sheppard Scores $17,500 Victory at Lebanon Valley

Matt Sheppard made a late race charge by Kenny Tremont Jr. and set his No. 9s machine on cruise control at Lebanon Valley Speedway for the Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modified Mr. Dirt Track USA 100. After Sheppard took a wild ride at Canandaigua on Saturday totaling his car, his team was able to regroup in no time to take the checkers Thursday night and capture the $17,500 victory. "I can't thank enough people. Bicknell practically built this racecar in a day; the lettering guy lettered it the day we picked it up. Every one of the manufacturers stepped right out," Sheppard said. "This thing didn't miss a beat tonight. This is what championships are made of. It was a big turning point from Saturday to tonight. Our season could have gone down hill in a hurry but instead we're sitting here in victory lane at Lebanon Valley." The Valley's regulars, Tremont Jr. and Keith Flach started the 32-car field to the initial green. Tremont jumped out early to a sizable lead. Tremont caught the back of the field on lap 21. Tremont was no stranger to lap traffic as he worked his way through pulling away from Flach and Brett Hearn. Hearn slowly worked his way on the bottom through lapped traffic and started knocking on the rear bumper of Flach patiently waiting to make his move for that second spot.Tremont was slicing and dicing his way through lap traffic until the halfway mark when Flach and Hearn started closing in. Tremont lead the way at the halfway mark over Flach, Hearn, Friesen and Matt Sheppard. Hearn used the bottom groove and drove by Flach for the second spot then chased Tremont down as he started knocking on his doors on lap 52. Just as things were heating up the second yellow flag of the night was brought out for a slow moving Jimmy Horton on lap 54. Tremont was running the topside as Hearn patiently hugged the bottom of the track hoping to make ground on him. Sheppard moved into the fourth spot over Friesen then drove under Flach and pulled away in third on lap 65. Tremont, Hearn and Sheppard were in their own league as they pulled away from the field, catching lap traffic on lap 75. Hearn then moved to the top to maneuver through lap traffic, opening the door for Sheppard to drive under him on lap 84 advancing Sheppard into the second spot. Friesen passed Flach on the bottom coming out of turn four for the third spot on lap 85.Sheppard was able to complete the pass as he dove to the bottom in turn three, slid to the top coming out of four, worked his way around a lapped car and took the lead on lap 89. The third yellow of the night was brought out on lap 90 due to a slow moving fourth place runner Hearn with a right rear flat. The final restart of the night saw the field restart single file as Sheppard set his car on cruise control as he pulled away with half a straightaway lead over Tremont. On that restart Friesen worked his way on the bottom for a couple of laps and was able to slide by Tremont for the second spot with just two laps to go. It was all Sheppard as he sailed his way to his first ever Mr. Dirt Track USA victory. "The car was phenomenal on the long runs. It was a little tight on the short runs. I'd lose the nose a little while and lose a little bit of ground. It just seemed like I could just drive it in straight and rotate the bottom. This motor really pulled up off the corners. I just can't thank everyone enough," Sheppard said in victory lane. "Long time car owner, Jeff Bruneau, he's in the hospital right now. There's no bigger win he would have loved than this one right here. We're praying for him. I'm sure he would have loved this one." Sixth place starter Friesen looked to make a repeat of last year but fell one spot short. "It was good tonight. The Halmar team has worked really hard all season. We have great racecar's and a great engine. We just didn't make the right adjustments for the feature. We had a good long run car but the short runs we were getting beaten up pretty good. I'm proud of my guys to finish second to Sheppard. That's nothing really to complain about. We'll work a little bit harder and come back out again on Monday." Lebanon Valley's regular Kenny Tremont Jr. led all but the final twelve laps of the feature rounding himself off with a third place finish. "This is such a good team. They did a great job tonight. We just used the right rear tire up and towards the end there we were just hanging on. I'm really pleased with how the car went, maybe a little bit harder tire compound would have helped us." Reutzel Wins MSTS Thriller

In what was one of the most exciting races of the season, the MSTS 360 Sprint Car main event featured more slide jobs than you could shake a stick at. It also became a costly race to some of the drivers who ran up front.

Carson McCarl of Altoona, Iowa got to start on the pole. He used his starting position to lead the first four laps. That’s when the real fun began.

At the same time, Dylan Peterson of Sioux Falls, and Logan Forler of Boise, Idaho, began trading slide jobs with McCarl.

A restart with 16 laps to go saw Wade Nygaard and Tim Kaeding put on a show of their own as they raced for fifth, turning Badlands Motor Speedway into “Slide Job City.”

They eventually joined the lead pack that already included McCarl, Peterson, Forler and Aaron Reutzel.

On lap 11, Reutzel made contact with Peterson as they battled for the lead. The contact was enough to put Peterson’s car out of commission as he stopped in turn two. “I have to apologize to the 25 team. I was trying to find my line,” Reutzel said after the race.

Having taken the lead, Reutzel tried to race away from McCarl and Nygaard, but the race was red flagged four laps later. McCarl, Brant O’Banion and Donovan Peterson were all involved in an accident as they approached turn one.

Reutzel never looked back on a green/white/checker finish as he earned his first win at BMS. “I figured starting seventh, we might as well try a couple of things,” Reutzel said. He added he was a little scared about the final restart.

Kaeding used that restart to pass Nygaard for a second place finish.

Richards Wins Keyser's Great Lakes Shootout

LAKE CITY, Mich. – August 28, 2016 – Josh Richards won the Keyser Manufacturing Great Lakes Shootout decisively Sunday night at Merritt Speedway. With his 17th trip to victory lane, Richards tied the World of Outlaws Craftsman® Late Model Series record for most wins in a season.

“We got to win six or seven, and we’ve had a phenomenal year,” Richards said. “It’s just crazy to think we’ve had ten wins since then. The track moved around quite a bit, more than I thought. I thought the bottom was going to be better than the top. The top had just enough brown where I was a little too tight early. But once the tires got to speed it was a lot better. I was just trying to get through lapped traffic the best I could, catch the brown, and it was a lot of fun racing. I can’t thank Merritt enough for holding us out another day.”

Though Richards led the 24-car field into the green flag for 50 laps, it only took Fruitport, Mich. native Rich Neiser the following lap to undertake him in turn two for the lead.  In a caution-free Craftsman Club® feature, the top five thereon spaced itself out into one-second splits. When the top of the field hit lapped traffic on lap 12, which is when windows of opportunity opened for those drivers.

The top three grouped together while positions four through six followed suit. Richards  gained ground on Neiser's No. 87 Bowman's Body Shop/ Daugherty Motorsports Rocket car, cutting the margin down to less than one second. On lap 21, Richards wedged his No. 1 Valvoline/ Seubert Calf Ranches Rocket car under Neiser in turn one, reclaiming the lead.

“Rich did a great job setting the pace,” Richards said. “He kind of showed me how much brown was left up there. I got to give him a lot of credit. He was one of the reasons why this car was as fast as it is. He helped us a lot – him and his brother. We had a great battle out there. It’s crazy.”

With 20 laps remaining, Richards kept three lapped cars in-between Neiser. Within the next few laps, Brandon Overton wheeled his No. 76 Budwiser/ C-H Paving Moyer/ Victory racecar into on the top of the cushion in turn three. His target: 2011 Series Champion Rick Eckert. Though he did not reel him in on lap 32, he succeeded the next lap.

With 10 laps remaining, Richards opened up a 3.876- second lead on the field. Meanwhile, Overton used his momentum to catapult his car into the second spot. Richards went on to win by a 7.467-second margin, earning the $10,000 purse. Overton recorded his 13th top five performance, finishing in the runner-up spot. Neiser rounded-out the podium.

“We just started a little too far back.” Overton said. “I didn’t really get going until the last 15 laps. I hope I’m gaining some points. I’d love to go to Charlotte just to race. I’d like to go there without any pressure. We’ve been working on it, and we’re definitely getting better. I’m excited. We did some stuff to the car last night and some stuff today. It was good.”

Neiser was the only Michigan-native to place in the top five. Earlier in the night, he recorded his first series heat win in two starts this season. As for Richards, he recorded his 10th consecutive top five finish of 2016.

“I have to thank Mark and Josh for helping me with that car first of all,” Neiser said. “If it wasn’t for them, it wouldn’t be what it is. I got to thank my brother and all my sponsors. I represented Michigan the best I could and as far as I’m concerned, I won the thing. Thanks for all the fans who came out. I really appreciate it. Right at the end, I got into lapped traffic and was a little too snug. I knew I was in trouble. I was hoping for a yellow.”

Jimmy Mars Goes Back-to-Back at Scheffler Memorial

The slick smooth surface of Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway suited Jimmy Mars as he lived up to being the “Ice Man” in front of the home town Wisconsin fans. While early leaders Dave Eckrich and Chris Simpson battled up front to take the prize back to Iowa, Mars who started 7th was working his way to the front of the field of Corn Belt Clash Hot Rods. Before long he passed Chris Simpson who looked to have another victory in sight. Jimmy Mars worked the heavy traffic that the caution less feature produced and won his second straight George Scheffler Memorial.

The racing was exciting throughout the field with all competitors battling for every position. Chris Simpson held on for 2nd with Mitch McGrath on his tail to grab 3rd place. Chad Simpson started 11th and worked his way around the maze of traffic to take 4th and Nick Anvelink rounded out the top 5.

Justin Haers Returns To Victory At The Land of Legends

CANANDAIGUA, NY – ”After we had problems at Rolling Wheels with my regular car, my crew kept pestering me to ‘get the red car out’. I was saving that car for the year end shows. But here we are now,” commented an elated Justin Haers in victory lane at Canandaigua Motorsports Park. Haers piloted the retro looking Billy Taylor-Doug Hoffman number 1, the same car he drove at last year’s SDW in Syracuse.

The 35-lap DIRTcar Modified feature was full of surprises. Tommy Keyes took the lead from his outside pole position. The feature was only two laps old when track points leader Matt Sheppard’s car dug its nose into the track going into the third turn and began flipping wildly. He emerged uninjured, but his number 9s was badly damaged. During this yellow Danny Johnson pitted and did not return to the race.

Keyes would lose the lead to Tim Fuller on lap seven. Fuller then began to pull away and looked to have the race under control. The yellow flew on lap 12, when Dave Rauscher had a drive shaft break and slam his leg. Crews were on the scene quickly, but Rauscher was able to walk to the ambulance.

Fuller’s race would also come to an end, as he lost a right front wheel going into the third turn. This left the lead to Haers.

Haers would lead the remainder of the distance. Gary Tomkins tried to run down Haers but had to settle for second. Billy Decker, Alan Johnson and Peter Britten rounded out the top five. “It was a real workout tonight,” added Haers. “But all-in-all it was a great night.”
